Directions to Launch Sites in Western Long Island Sound

Orchard Beach, Bronx
Take I-95 south to exit 14 in NY - Hutchinson Parkway South, toward Whitestone Bridge. After .5 mile, take exit 5 toward Orchard Beach/City Island. Follow signs to Orchard Beach (less than 1 mile). After paying the $8 parking fee, enter parking lot, turn left and go to the far left corner of the lot. Across the road from the lot you will see a small sign for "Canoe & Kayak Launch." Park car and carry boat across the road to the launch site.

Weed Beach, Darien
From New York (west) Take I-95 to exit 10 – Noroton Ave. At the end of the ramp, turn south on Noroton Ave. towards the Sound and go to Rt. 1. Turn right and make your immediate left onto Nearwater Lane. Then follow directions below.

From the east, take I-95 to exit 11. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto Rt 1 heading west towards Stamford.
Go 1.2 mile to a traffic light and turn left onto Nearwater Lane.

Go .8 mile on Nearwater Lane to the entrance to Weed Beach Park, on your right. (Do not enter Noroton Bay Estates, which is straight ahead). Turn into the park and go straight back to the beach launch area adjacent to the platform tennis facility.

There is an outhouse available. The park opens at 6:00 am. Residents only from May 1 through Labor Day weekend.

Pear Tree Point Beach, Darien
From New York (west) take I-95 to exit 10 - Noroton Ave. At the end of the ramp, turn south on Noroton Ave. towards LI Sound and continue to Route 1. Turn left onto Route 1, then take your first right onto Rings End Road. Follow it to the end, over the bridge, then turn right onto Pear Tree Point Road. The beach will be on your right.

From east of Darien, take I-95 to exit 11. Turn left at the ramp onto Route 1, heading west. Go about one mile and turn left onto Ring's End Road. Follow it to the end, over the bridge, then turn right onto Pear Tree Point Road. The beach will be on your right.

Second Street & Calf Pasture Beach, Norwalk
From I-95 take exit 16. At the foot of the ramp turn onto East Avenue heading south towards the Sound. Go through four traffic lights, then follow signs to "Beach Area", taking Gregory Boulevard to the first traffic light, which is First Street. Take the next right onto Second Street and go all the way to the end. This launch accesses protected water on the Norwalk River estuary.
For Calf Pasture Beach, do not turn right, but continue on Gregory Boulevard to the entrance to Calf Pasture. This launch is directly onto LI Sound and is the best access point for any trips to the Norwalk Islands.

Rye Playland, Rye, NY

From east or west, take exit 19 in New York ("Playland Parkway").
You will be dumped onto Playland Parkway, a limited access highway.
Continue through three traffic lights.
At the "T", turn left and continue down the hill to the traffic circle in front of the Playland's main entrance.
Pass through the two gatehouses and continue on the road that leaves Playland on the right and the parking lot on the left.
Take your first right, which will be after the end of Playland and immediately before Manursing Lake (the first gate after the end of Playland will probably be closed, but the second one, immediately next to the lake, will be open).
After you have turned right and reached the end of Playland's north side, you will immediately cross a small bridge and find yourself on a spit of land with Manursing Lake on your left and the Sound on your right.
Park on the right, after the trailer and the refuse pile.
If you've driven into the Read Sanctuary, or even into the grassy parking area before the Read Sanctuary, you've gone too far.
