Welcome
to Sound Kayakers, a club for sea kayakers from Connecticut
and New York who paddle in Long Island Sound. We are an American
Canoe Association (ACA) Paddle America Club, which gives
our ACA members liability coverage for club events.
Sound Kayakers organizes monthly meetings & trips,
stroke-refinement & rescue clinics, camping trips, and other
events to develop the kayaking skills and seamanship of trip
participants.
Founding members include Michele Sorensen, Jean Trapani, Howard
Pierce, John Forsberg, Louise & Greg Kandel, Grace Pisano,
Melissa Hubner, George Knight, Claire & Tom Dickerson, Cindy
& Jim Clark, Nick Clarke, Ed Hansen, Roger Crossland and
Mark Hinkley (2004 members still active in the club).
The club leader is Michele Sorensen, an ACA Coastal Kayak Instructor
from Norwalk, CT, who is Managing Director of Kayak
Adventure LLC. As of April, 2008, the club had 77 members,
from as far south as Farwood, NJ, north to Northkill, NY and
Hartford, CT, and east to Branford, CT.

Howard, Ed, Grace, Nick and Rich join Michele on our 3rd annual
New Year's Day paddle off Compo Beach, Westport.
Our club supports several
charitable projects, including the Soundkeeper's
Lighthouse to Lighthouse Race and Ocean
Conservancy's International Coastal Clean-up. We have adopted
the Goose Island unit of the Stewart
B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.

Other Regional Clubs:
There are several clubs in the region. Ours is one of two
with a primary focus on the western Sound. For example, Connyak
best serves sea kayakers in the eastern part of the state, with
some trips in the western end. The Appalachian Mountain Club
CT chapter (AMC) serves
all Connecticut paddlers, with whitewater and flatwater groups.
KALM,
The Kayakers Alliance of Larchmont and Mamaroneck, started in
2005. The Housatonic Valley
Paddling Club meets monthly in Newtown. They focus on lake
& river paddling in northwestern Connecticut. The Yonkers
Paddling & Rowing Club is based in Westchester County,
with a boat house on the Hudson River. The Cold
Spring Kayak Club also promotes paddling on the Hudson River.
RI Canoe/Kayak Association
serves Rhode Island.
